Feeling    2018

Monoprint, linocut

Price: $200
Size: 56 X 76 cm
Edition: unique

Inspiration:
My fascination for insect lifestyles, admiration for their beauty and for what they can teach people about adaptability, the need for diversity and acceptance of change, lead me to making this work. I created the insects larger than life, to remind the viewer that the human view is coloured by the way insects directly affect our lives and activities. It also aims to remind viewers that the majority of insects play significant roles in the wellbeing of the many ecosystems they inhabit. The huge range of sizes, shapes and textures of insects visually tell us that they are beneficial, enterprising, interesting and frequently beautiful creatures.

Antipodes Bound -2017

Printed and mixed media installation

Price: $2500 (including aluminium hanging grid)
Size:   Variable (approx. 3000 X  1500 x 1500 cm)
Edition: Unique

Inspiration: These aprons were inspired by my research into migrants and in particular, research into my Scottish grandmother who migrated from Scotland to New Zealand in 1928. She always wore an apron. The aprons are hung upside-down in a group at various levels at low height for a ‘human’ connection with the viewer. Antipodes Bound is a collection of migrant endeavours as they make their way South to begin living in their adopted country. The draping and folding of the fabrics may suggest the human form, almost as if the aprons still hold the human mould and their human vulnerabilities. The ties vary in length. Some reach down like arms to their new country and some pool on the floor as if taking root in their new land.

Fragmented Dimensions  - 2017

Printed and mixed media Installation

Price: $800
Size: 3000 X 350 cm
Edition: Unique

Inspiration: This work (in an approx., boat shape) is in three layers:

  • Torn Black and white photos glued onto muslin (based on my research into my Scottish grandparents.
  • Printed silk organza veils (environmental marks from their new land)
  • Mixed media – hand-stitching, knitting, printed text, fabric selvedges and red threads (representing migrant skills, thriftiness and willingness to work).

There is also a contemporary section about migrants, using coloured photos, printed silk organza and mixed media. The red threads across the work link the concepts in the artefact, suggesting journeys over time leading to eventual assimilation.

Price: $380 (unframed).
Size : 440 X 430 mm
Edition: 5

Inspiration: Researching the history of Mt Barker and Colonist activities. I came upon the title Entre Chien et Loup by chance recently. It is a French idiom. The literal translation is ‘Between a dog and a wolf’, but this isn’t what the idiom means. It has several meanings: between safety and danger; between domestic and wild (especially seeing something at dusk when the light begins to fade). I thought it was delightful, so used it as my title!
